Preparing
How to prepare.
A few simple steps help your results read accurately. Your lab’s own instructions always come first.
Check whether your test needs a fast
Panels with glucose, insulin or lipids often ask for an overnight fast with water only. A morning draw makes fasting easier.

Preparation questions.
Why fast?
Food changes glucose, insulin and lipid levels for several hours, so many panels are read after a fast.
Can I drink water?
Yes. Water keeps you hydrated and makes the draw easier. It does not change these results.
What if I forgot to fast?
Tell the lab before your draw. They can tell you which tests can still run, or you can choose another day.
Should I take my medications?
Ask the lab or the clinician who prescribed them. Some tests are timed around certain medications.
